J. Irwin Miller Symposium, “The Sound of Architecture”

J. Irwin Miller Symposium, “The Sound of Architecture”

Organized by YSoA professor Kurt Forster and Ph.D. candidate Joseph Clarke, this symposium will draw on a variety of disciplines to advance our understanding of architecture as an auditory environment. Leading scholars from fields as diverse as archeology, media studies, musicology, philosophy, and the history of technology as well as major architects, acoustical engineers, composers, and artists will cover a range of contemporary issues related to sound — from achieving the optimal communication of sound in a performance hall to using architectural innovation to combat the ambient noise of urban life. Noted speakers include Brigitte Shim, who will talk about the house her Toronto-based firm designed for a mathematician and amateur musician, and Elizabeth Diller, whose firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro has performed extensive renovations at Lincoln Center including the acclaimed redesign of Alice Tully Hall. The program includes the performance of an audiovisual work by composer Ingram Marshall, visiting lecturer at the Yale School of Music.
