“Good Goods”

by Christina Anderson, DRA ’11 — The West Coast Premiere

Directed by Marissa Wolf, performed by Crowded Fire Theater

The work of playwright Christina Anderson returns to San Francisco this June with Crowded Fire Theater’s West Coast Premiere production of Good Goods. The production reunites the playwright with Marissa Wolf, who directed the successful 2009 production of Anderson’s DRIP. “We’re so thrilled to welcome Christina back to Crowded Fire. She brings a raw, immediate, lyrical voice to our stage” says Wolf, Crowded Fire’s Artistic Director. For Anderson, the respect is mutual. “It’s a joy to return to such a creative and passionate company. I’m excited to reunite with Marissa. She’s an insightful director who knows how to bring the worlds of my plays to the stage with artistry and skill.”

About The Play
Good Goods is set in a small Black town that doesn’t appear on any map. In it, a young man, Stacey Good, is summoned back to run his family-owned general store. Past and present collide when four lost souls reunite, forcing Stacey to confront long buried feelings for Wire, his childhood best friend. Partnerships dissolve, alliances shift, and romances ignite as a tragic accident unleashes the town’s mysterious history. Blurring the line between body and spirit, Good Goods is an otherworldly love story of the (dis)possessed.

The story unfolds in a sliding scale of time between 1961 and 1994, blurring the lines between realism and the dreamlike hyper-real. Anderson explores the embodiment of 33 years of significant Black American history in a single story that takes place in the aftermath of an “Invasion.” The haunted landscape of Good Goods serves as the background for a powerful story that examines possession, love, and ownership. “Christina speaks with such a singular voice,” says Wolf. "Her worlds topple traditional forms of naturalism, offering instead a magical, spiritual, southern all Black landscape in which time and space move in startling ways.”
