“Hamlet”

Location is wheelchair accessible
Because of its eloquence, and the delicate, lucid shaping by the dramatist of the play’s protagonist, Shakespeare’s Hamlet has been as redbud to the hummingbird, attracting to its text the world’s most nuanced, gifted actors. As a result, it leaves a performance legacy and a filmography that has, over time, found its way into the text itself. The goal of our work will be to uncouple the text of Hamlet from the play’s production history, laying bare its profound reflections on both the lust for power and the power of lust, of different kinds of abiding love, on madness and its corollaries, on the nature of being born with the knowledge of mortality, on the very power of theater to reveal truth, and on the architecture of tragedy as it unfolds within a young man pitted by circumstance against his own nature.

By William Shakespeare. A senior project for Justin Dobies, Ella Dershowitz, and Tom Sanchez, directed by Deborah Margolin.

Part of Shakespeare at Yale, a semester of special events celebrating the Bard.
