“A Prayer for Owen Meany”

the 2012 Dramat Freshman Show

by Simon Bent (adapted from the novel by John Irving)

Location is wheelchair accessible
John Wheelwright tells the story of growing up in Gravesend, New Hampshire with Owen Meany, a small boy with a wrecked voice who believes he is the instrument of God. The two friends become inextricably linked after a freak accident in which Owen kills John’s mother during a baseball game. John refuses to blame Owen, but he also refuses to believe in a higher purpose. Owen’s unshakeable faith in his own destiny is perpetually at odds with John’s struggle to believe.

With a cast of over thirty characters, Irving’s modern American classic explodes onto the stage in a paradoxical challenge to memory, life, God, and prayer.
