YSFF Workshop: Comedy in Film

Writer/director Jonathan Smith talks about comedy in film, playing “game” in your movies, and how every good film is just the same scene over and over again, and basically simplifies all films in a way you’ve never heard before.

JONATHAN SMITH is a filmmaker and an improv and sketch comedian.  He graduated with a degree in Film Studies from Yale University and has studied, written, and performed at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre.  His first feature film, Breast Picture, a comedy about pornographers who make an Oscar-worthy drama,  was released in 2010 by Gravitas Ventures.  His second feature film, The Worst Year of My Life, a relationship drama/comedy, opened theatrically in 2015 and was released by Devolver Digital Films and Indie Rights.

The Hollywood Reporter has called Jonathan “someone to watch” and, in its review of Jonathan’s second film, Film Journal International said, “Signaling the advent of a promising new talent, The Worst Year of My Life could be one of the best films of yours.”  Jonathan’s other notable film achievements include optioning a comedy entitled Batsh*t Bride with Oscar-winning director James Moll at Allentown Productions at Universal Studios and winning the Jury and Audience Awards at the Collaboration Filmmakers Challenge with his short film A Simple Test.
Jonathan currently develops story at Blue Sky Studios for 20th Century Fox and continues to direct indie features.
