Antarctic Invertebrates – Why Bycatch Matters

Eric Lazo-Wasem, Senior Collections Manager, Division of Invertebrate Zoology

The Southern Ocean is regarded as a fragile ecosystem, one that could be significantly impacted by extensive commercial fishing. As such, the detection of vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs) has been a focus of considerable research. During benthic surveys to assess commercial fish stocks, a team of scientists was also responsible for characterizing the invertebrate bycatch. Join us for this discussion of the Peabody’s Antarctic invertebrate collection, now part of the Division of Invertebrate Zoology. Light refreshments will be served.
