Architecture critic Carter Wiseman writes that Adam Van Doren’s delicate watercolor evocations of the spirit of Yale’s traditional buildings are reminders of an educational goal that values not only the acquisition of knowledge, but also of wisdom, which can be gained only over time. Van Doren’s slightly dreamy images—especially of Harkness Tower and Pierson College—capture not just the time-honored reverence for inquiry that must animate any great institution of higher learning, but also the romantic idealism that has long contributed to Yale’s unique cultural legacy.
