A Midsummer Night’s Painting

Location is wheelchair accessible
Shakespeare has long ispired artists who have composed visual narratives inspired by his plays —as with John Millais’s “Ophelia” or E.A. Abbey’s dramatic illustrations. In this tradition, Kat Oshman and Katie White, both junior Art majors in the painting concentration, will collaborate on an enormous painting inspired by the play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

Painters are often thought of as isolated individuals, whereas actors are thought of as members of a team. Thus, the two artists will incorporate this collaborative aspect of theater into their painting, fusing their styles to form one cohesive piece. Oshman and White will explore original prints and engravings of Shakespearean-influenced artwork at Beinecke and the YCBA to study how the visual depiction of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” has morphed over time. The final exhibition will include reproductions of their sources and influences, along with their preliminary studies for the larger painting.

Part of Shakespeare at Yale, a semester of special events celebrating the Bard.
