Look Behind the Label: Rhetorics and Narratives of Contemporary Slavery

Samuel Martinez, Associate Professor of Anthropology and Latin American Studies, University of Connecticut

Location is wheelchair accessible
In confronting coerced exploitation, is it not just whether we act but how we choose to respond to knowledge of egregious wrong that may spell the difference between harm and help for today’s un-free workers? Focusing particularly on cases where a diagnosis of contemporary slavery has brought harm to workers, Samuel Martínez will discuss differences between cases that must be called “slavery” and others that might better be understood via other conceptual labels, pointing out implications for how we may respond responsibly. This talk is part of the GLC Brown Bag Lunch Series. Bring your lunch and we’ll provide the drinks & dessert.
