Lecture and Book Signing: “The Company of Artists: The Origins of the Royal Academy of Arts in London”
Charles Saumarez Smith, Secretary and Chief Executive, Royal Academy of Arts, London
Charles Saumarez Smith will describe the issues that led him to write “The Company of Artists,” a book about the first few months of the history of the Royal Academy. It discusses the extent to which the workings of the Royal Academy are still governed by a set of Laws first written in 1768; how, as with many institutions, the circumstances of its origin still influence the way it operates; and the accretion of myths surrounding the foundation, including the belief that the Laws were written by Samuel Johnson and that there is a relationship between the Laws and the American Constitution. Charles Saumarez Smith is the former director of the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery, both in London. Copies of “The Company of Artists” will be available for purchase; a book signing and reception will follow the lecture.
