The faculty of the Committee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies at Yale is pleased to announce that Samuel R. Delany is the 2012-13 recipient of the Brudner Prize.
Samuel R. Delany is professor of English and creative writing at Temple University. An acclaimed critic and novelist, he is winner of multiple Nebula and Hugo Awards, an inductee into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, and recipient of the William Whitehead Memorial Award for lifetime achievement. His novels include Nova, Dhalgren, Trouble on Triton, The Mad Man, Dark Reflections, which won the 2008 Stonewall Book Award, and, most recently, Through the Valley of the Nest of Spiders. Delany is also an influential queer critic and mentor to the next generation of queer studies scholars. His book Times Square Red, Times Square Blue, which analyzes the impact of Times Square’s redevelopment on working-class queer sexual culture, and The Motion of Light in Water, a memoir of his life as a black and gay writer, are regularly taught at Yale and across the country. Delany has been named one of Out Magazine’s 100 most important gay men and women of the year, and in 1990 The Lambda Literary Report included him in a list of 50 men and women who had done the most to change modern attitudes towards gayness. He was recently the subject of a documentary by Fred Barney Taylor, The Polymath: The Life and Opinions of Samuel R. Delany, Gentleman.
