panel paintings, the earliest works in the Center’s collection, which are painted in oil on wood. It also represents the first stage of an international research project devoted to the study of early English panel paintings conducted by the Center in collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery, London.
For the “Art in Focus” exhibition, works will be examined using a variety of analytical techniques of modern conservation practice, such as x-radiography and infrared reflectography, x-ray fluorescence, and polarizing light microscopy. Student curators use these techniques to determine each work’s material make-up, technique of fabrication, and subsequent physical history. Issues that affect a picture’s cosmetic appearance and art historical interpretation also will be explored with a variety of didactic material.
